Reno Piscopo scored a stunning free kick but a late Iraq equaliser ensured Australia U-23's national team opened their AFC U-23 Championship campaign with a 1-1 draw.

Graham Arnold's side were on course to open their Group A account with three points after Wellington Phoenix starlet Piscopo opened the scoring with a remarkable long-range effort just over the hour mark.

Melbourne Victory have fired Marco Kurz as head coach after only 13 Hyundai A-League matches in charge.

The 2017/18 Champions appointed the former Adelaide United boss seven months ago to succeed departing club stalwart Kevin Muscat, who spent six seasons in the Victory dugout.

Assistant Carlos Salvachua has been promoted to the role of head coach for the rest of the season and his first match in charge will be the Original Rivalry clash against Kurz’s former club Adelaide at Coopers Stadium on Friday, 17 January.

Australia’s U-23 men’s national football team qualified for the semi-finals of the AFC U-23 Championship for the first time on Saturday, defeating Syria 1-0 at the iconic Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok after extra time.

With the score locked at 0-0 at the end of 90 minutes, the match entered extra time in stifling conditions, and it was Adelaide United attacker Al Hassan Toure’s strike in the 101st minute of the contest that ultimately separated the two nations on the scoreboard.

One of the most boring games I've ever watched. Even Australia's best player for these Championship's was below par.

Graham Arnold says his Australian U-23 side have achieved nothing yet, with qualification for this year’s Olympic Games are mere by-product of the overall goal of becoming Asian champions.

The young Aussies take on Korea Republic in the semi final of the AFC U-23 Championship on Thursday morning (AEDT) knowing victory will book their spot at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Australia's U-23 squad are on the verge of a major achievement when they head into Thursday morning's (AEDT) AFC U-23 Championship semi-final against Korea Republic.

If Graham Arnold's squad can emerge with a victory over Korea, they will not only advance to the tournament's final for the first time in our history but also punch their ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

This squad, which plays their football at various clubs in the Hyundai A-League and abroad, have meshed together wonderfully under Arnold and his staff and have done a superb job to sit on the cusp of history.

Ahead of Thursday's massive clash against Korea Republic, we take a closer look at every member of the green and gold squad that have performed so brilliantly in Thailand.

Graham Arnold says knowing the full-time whistle will come on Australia Day back home will further inspire his side in Saturday night’s AFC U-23 Championship third-place playoff against Uzbekistan.

A win against the White Wolves at Rajamangala Stadium will seal Australia’s place as one of Asia’s representatives in the men’s football competition at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games – a stage the Olyroos haven’t graced since Beijing 2008.

And, while Australia’s fixture against Uzbekistan will kick-off on January 25 (11.30pm AEDT), supporters on the east coast of Australia will watch the bulk of the contest on Australia Day – January 26.
