The ‘Team of the Era’ was selected by an expert seven-man panel which consisted of Geoff Armstrong, Peter Black, Ian Heads, Gary Lester, Roy Masters, Arthur Summons and Larry Writer.

‘Never Before, Never Again Team Of The Era:

Starting Team

Graeme Langlands
Wing: Eddie Lumsden
Centre: Reg Gasnier

Centre: Billy Smith
Wing: Johnny King
Five-Eighth: Brian Clay

I picked the ones in red - I think picking Billy in the centres was fair ... but not right. I picked him at half. So 3 of mine didn't make it. Gourley R, Maddison K, and Huddart. So 15/18.

My Team:

Fullback Graeme Langlands
Wing Johnny King
Centre Reg Gasnier
Centre Ken Maddison
Wing Eddie Lumsden
Five Eighth Brian Clay
Halfback Billy Smith
Prop Harry Bath
Hooker Ken Kearney
Prop Kevin Ryan
Second Row Elton Rasmussen
Second Row Norm Provan
Lock Johnny Raper
Interchange Robin Gourley
Interchange Dick Huddart
Interchange Monty Porter
Interchange Billy Wilson
18th: George Evans

Your pick was pretty good SJ but it would be hard to pick a bad team from those years and picking the side would be easy but picking who to leave out a real problem. Billy was pretty solid as a centre and did play there a lot

True - but I preferred him as a half - and thought Maddison added some starch.

we had a lot of good halves in those days unlike the present. Smith and Evans to name a couple or even toss in Mark Shulman or slippery from later years.

St. George 1959 Premiers. After eighteen premiership rounds St. George had scored an average of over 30 points per match and conceded an average of 10 points. St. George would go on to play Manly in the grand final winning 20-0.
