In a major step forward for technical progress, 13 match officials and eight coaches have taken part in ‘professional placements’ activities as part of the EU-backed Training and Education Portal project, which completes at the end of this year.

In the build-up to the RLEF Congress in Serbia - one of the project’s cluster leaders - the week-long professional development programme included coaches; Mike Aughey (Ireland), Aitor Davilas (Spain), Bob Doughton (Germany), Tiziano Franchini (Italy), David Lahr (Czech Republic), Slobodan Manak (Serbia) and Thijs van der Zouwen (Netherlands).

There were three main strands of activity: attending and analysing matches, sessions to analyse training methods, and workshops covering, amongst other things, match analysis, the warm up and coaching philosophy. Four of the coaches took part in the first professional placement activity in Leeds in June, with the group now providing the sport with a strong corps of coach educators.

The European Rugby League Federation is the confederation for Rugby League in Europe, North & Central America, the Middle East and Africa.

It oversees and co-ordinates the development of the sport in all its member countries and territories, as well as neighbouring organisations that choose to link to the ERL.

There are three levels of affiliation; Full, Affiliate and Observer Members. Full Members receive four votes, Affiliate Members two vote, and Observers no votes at Council.

The Members form the Council or general assembly and can vote at the AGM. France and England, as senior Full Members, have a combined veto power over the Council.

Directors are mandated for terms of three-years. The RFL and FFRXIII each have one seat on the Board; three seats are voted by the Membership, and four seats reserved for Independent Directors. The chair is elected by the Directors and must be drawn from the Independent Directors.

The executive is formed by the general manager, who oversees three regional directors, in addition to coaching, officiating and media staff.

The ERL, as a confederation, is an Associate Member of the International Rugby League.
