Co-captain Reni Maitua has revealed his "relief" to have been shown the door at Parramatta but has turned down a mid-season offer at another NRL club to stay loyal to his teammates.

Maitua told Fairfax Media he had been thinking about leaving the Eels before Ricky Stuart included him in the mass clean-out, but his gratitude to the club for giving him a second chance after he was suspended from the game, as well as his relationship with his teammates, kept him in blue and gold.

"I spoke to a club about moving on this week," Maitua said. "But I don't think it would've been fair and it's not how I was brought up as a person. I wouldn't want to abandon the boys through this tough period. Everyone's hurting, there's no point getting up and running away from all of it.

"It's a tough period for the club and it's just as tough for the players. I didn't want to abandon the boys. I'm really close to these boys and I've never met a bunch of blokes who are so close. There are no clicks within the team. Morally it wouldn't have been right. I wouldn't abandon any of mates any time, whether that's in sport or in general life."

Ricky Stuart ruthlessly stamped his mark on Parramatta on Wednesday, telling at least a dozen NRL players their services will not be required in 2013.

The former NSW mentor is keen to make an impression on the Eels, having inherited an ageing squad - and the results of that will be seen as soon as next season.

It is understood co-captain Reni Maitua and veterans Ben Smith, Willie Tonga and Matt Keating are among the players who have been told to find other clubs.

Smith and Maitua have another year to run on their contracts after this season but have been told they are free to look elsewhere.

Tonga, a marquee recruit from North Queensland, is reportedly on $350,000 a season but injury has restricted him to just 12 games since joining the club at the start of last year.

Penrith captain Kevin Kingston could return to Parramatta next season to play under coach Ricky Stuart for the second time in his career.

The Eels, who have decided against retaining Matt Keating for next year, have expressed interest in the Panthers' No.9 after England hooker James Roby knocked back a lucrative deal to become the club's long-term dummy-half. Unwanted by the Panthers at the end of this season, Kingston admits he's running out of time to make a decision on his future but said a return to Parramatta was on the cards.

Parramatta have targeted South Sydney's Nathan Peats as a potential hooking solution.

And the Eels could get their man for next year, with Souths considering granting Peats an early release from his contract to free up salary cap space to secure the Burgess quartet long term. The Eels are desperate to sign a quality No.9 after Matt Keating was told he wasn't a part of coach Ricky Stuart's plans for the future.

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have today re-signed forward Ken Edwards for an additional two years.

The young second-rower and lock has extended his deal with the blue and gold until the end of 2015, and hopes to sidestep the salary cap hurdles that have kept him out of first-grade in the 2013 season.

Sad to see parra on its way to the spoon again. Maybe while they are cleaning out the players they might think seriously about cleaning out the coach. Apart from a fleeting success at the roosters with a good playing roster he hasn't set the game on fire at a club or origin level.

PARRAMATTA will allow star recruit Gareth Hock to walk away from a new two-year deal and stay with his young family in England.

The firebrand backrower only signed with the Eels in late April, but has had a change of heart about moving to Australia because of complicated circumstances.

Hock's partner is pregnant with the couple's first child and is adamant about remaining in the Old Dart.

According to well-placed sources in England, the Widnes Vikings forward has settled on a desire to remain by her side at the expense of his contract with Parramatta.

Telegraph.

Parra seem to have trouble picking players to buy - sometimes paying overs - and sometimes picking the duds. But - then look at Benny and Bellamy - and Manly. They pick up the "duds" and turn them into good/great players.

Another courageous move ... :)

Willie Tonga was past it 2 years ago. Can't see why they would want to stick with him. I thought parra had a few good juniors coming through.

The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have today announced the signing of Justin Hunt to a 3-year deal commencing in 2014.

A talented winger or fullback, Hunt has played 13 NRL games for the South Sydney Rabbitohs since making his first grade debut in 2012.

Blessed with blistering pace and football awareness, Pirtek Parramatta Eels Head Coach Ricky Stuart believes the 24 year old will get the opportunity to reach his full potential wearing the blue and gold.
