Mick Potter has been given a warm, if unusual, welcome to the Mate Ma'a Tonga setup.

As the team trained in Hamilton on Thursday ahead of next week's test against the Kangaroos in Auckland, Potter was treated to an initiation where the players slapped him with their jandals.

Potter coached Fiji during last year's Rugby League World Cup, where they stunned the Kiwis in Wellington in the quarterfinals.


Mick Potter has been welcomed into the Mate Ma'a Tonga fold.

Tonga arrived in Auckland on Wednesday night, where they were greeted by around 2000 fans at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau.

The welcome for Potter shows the team are in good spirits, heading into their clash with the Kangaroos.
