England back-rower John Bateman will miss around a month after breaking a rib in Saturday's derby with St Helens, Wigan boss Matt Peet confirmed.

Bateman played through the pain, scoring a try as the Warriors were beaten late on by their local rivals.

Betfred Super League
Wigan (18) 30
Tries: French (2), Field, Farrell, Marshall Goals: Smith (5)
St Helens (2) 10
Tries: Lussick, Batchelor Goals: Lomax

Wigan sealed second place and a Super League semi-final spot as they dashed St Helens' hopes of securing the League Leaders' Shield in Warriors' backyard.

Bevan French, Jai Field and Liam Farrell put Wigan 18-2 up at the break.

Saints had led via Jonny Lomax's early penalty but Wigan soaked up pressure and were clinical on the counter.

Joey Lussick reduced Saints' deficit but Liam Marshall's solo try and French's late score settled it either side of Joe Batchelor's consolation.

Betfred Super League
Warrington (6) 6
Try: Nicholson Goal: Ratchford
Wigan (10) 13
Tries: Wardle, O'Neill Goals: Smith 2 Drop-goal: Smith

Super League leaders Warrington's 100% winning start came to an end as they were edged out by second-placed Wigan in a derby classic at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

First-half tries from Jake Wardle and Brad O'Neill earned the Warriors a 10-0 lead.

Warrington hit back with a converted try from Wigan old boy Matty Nicholson.

But Harry Smith closed the door with an early second-half penalty before taking his team out of reach with a drop goal.

Warrington had two second-half tries chalked off, the second of them less than a minute from time when it was controversially ruled that Greg Minikin had lost control of the ball in touching down.

But Wire would still have needed to score again. Second-placed Wigan were worthy winners on the back of their first-half performance, when they wasted several great chances to have built an even bigger lead, largely down to the slippery rain-sodden ball.

Betfred Super League
Wigan (18) 22
Tries: Marshall, Miski, Havard, French Goals: Smith 3
Wakefield (0) 6
Try: Pitts; Goal: Lino

Wigan Warriors climbed to the top of Super League with a comfortable home victory over bottom club Wakefield.

Liam Marshall followed his four tries against Trinity in February with the opening score from Bevan French's pass.

Abbas Miski and Ethan Havard also went over before half-time for an 18-0 lead.

Jay Pitts crossed for Wakefield while Wigan forward Willie Isa was in the sin bin, but full-back French touched down for his 100th career try to send the visitors to a 10th consecutive defeat.
