France defeated Australia 72-63 in Bourges, France to put a dent in the Opals’ Olympic aspirations.

For the Chemist Warehouse Australian Opals, this match against France was always going to be the toughest test of the three-game Olympic qualification series.

Australia moved to within a victory of a berth in the Tokyo Olympics after a dominant 100-74 win over Puerto Rico in Bourges, France.

The Opals shook off the frustrations of their first-up loss to France with this vicious win over Puerto Rico fewer than 48 hours later, as Liz Cambage continued her stellar vein of form.

With Olympic qualification on the line, the best thing you could do before the Australia-Brazil match-up, the third and final game of this Bourges-based series, was exhale.

Finally, coach Brondello high-fived every member of the Australian team, and the Opals had secured an 86-72 victory.

Australia’s home and away games against Hong Kong switched

FIBA, the world governing body for the sport of basketball, has today announced the Australian Boomers Asia Cup 2021 qualifier against Hong Kong, currently scheduled to take place in Hong Kong on Sunday 23 February, has been moved to Brisbane’s Nissan Arena and will take place on the same date at 12:30 pm (local).

Basketball supporters will now have the opportunity to see the defending Asia Cup champions, Australia, compete in two FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifying games inside four days. Prior to the switched Hong Kong fixture on Sunday 23 February, the Boomers will host trans-Tasman rivals the New Zealand Tall Blacks in their opening game of their FIBA Asia Cup 2021 qualifying campaign at Nissan Arena on Thursday 20 February at 6:30 pm (local).

FIBA has made the decision to change the schedule as a precautionary measure in light of the current coronavirus outbreak. Australia will now play Hong Kong away in February 2021 during the third window of qualifying.

Josh Giddey, a 6’8” recruit from the Centre of Excellence, is the youngest Boomer since the likes of Ben Simmons. Undoubtedly, Giddey is a star on the rise, and one to keep your eye on.

The OQT that was initially scheduled to be held on 18-22 March 2020 in Bangalore, India has been postponed and FIBA is now working in close collaboration with the International Olympic Committee on the best possible solution, considering that this tournament needs to take place before the FIBA 3x3 Universality Olympic Qualification Tournament scheduled to be played in Budapest, Hungary, from April 24 to 26, 2020.
