CARLTON young gun Sam Walsh has been recognised for his remarkable and record-breaking first season in senior football, claiming the NAB AFL Rising Star on Friday.

The overwhelming favourite for the award, Walsh polled 54 out of a possible 55 votes to claim the Rising Star in a landslide from Connor Rozee and Sydney Stack.

Update
EXCITING Richmond forward Jack Higgins will be released from hospital on Thursday morning, but will take no further part in the season after suffering a bleed on his brain.

The issue was caused by an "abnormality" in his blood vessels, something he's had since birth but had not been previously identified.

JACK Higgins has been booked in for brain surgery this month.

The 20-year-old Richmond forward will require six months recovery from the procedure, and has been told he will be able to resume his football career late next year.

AUSTRALIAN music icon Paul Kelly will headline the Virgin Australia Pre-Game Show at the 2019 AFL Grand Final.

He will be supported by Dean Lewis and Tones and I, in line-up with a very local feel.

Kelly previously performed at the 2012 Grand Final alongside Tim Rogers and the Temper Trap.

Lewis, who reached number one on the ARIA charts in 2018 with his song Be Alright, will also perform at the post-match show, which is free to everyone regardless if they hold a Grand Final ticket.

Tones and I currently has the No.1 song on the ARIA charts in Dance Monkey.

Rounding out the entertainment, country music legend John Williamson AM will perform Waltzing Matilda, while September favourite Mike Brady AM will once again lead the crowd in Up the Cazaly, 40 years after the song was first released.

Another Australian musician, Conrad Sewell, has the daunting task of performing the national anthem.

Great selection. Why can't the NRL get someone the crowd would ALL like ? They want someone to sing along with - not a pop concert.

The AFL extends its deepest sympathies to the Frawley family, following the passing of Danny today, at the age of 56.

Frawley, an AFL Life member and a much-loved figure in football, played 240 games for St Kilda across 12 seasons and was a regular member of Victorian state of origin sides for almost a decade.
